Transitioning from strumming chords to playing fingerstyle opens up a completely new world of musical possibilities. The Fingerstyle Foundations workshop at Dan O Music Academy is designed to teach you how to become a one-person band—playing the bassline, rhythm, and melody all at the same time.
What You Will Master
This workshop is highly targeted. It is built for students who want to step away from standard strumming and learn the mechanical discipline required to play complex, polyphonic arrangements.
Right-Hand Mechanics
Learn proper hand placement, finger independence, and the traditional "PIMA" technique used by acoustic masters.
Travis Picking
Master the essential alternating thumb patterns that drive folk, blues, and acoustic rock fingerstyle playing.
Simultaneous Playing
Train your brain and hands to play a steady, driving bassline while picking syncopated melodies on top.
Tone Production
Discover how to draw a warm, rich, and dynamic tone out of the guitar using just your fingertips.
Workshop Details
This workshop is perfect for players who are comfortable with open chords and basic strumming but want to break out of the beginner plateau.
Skill Level
Early Intermediate Players are welcomed. Be ready for technically rigorous instruction of movements. Students already aware of Open Chord patterns and Open Position reading will have a smooth time.
The Progression

Weeks 1 & 2: Movement mechanics, right-hand conditioning, and fundamental finger independence.

Week 3: Introduction to alternating bass lines and Travis Picking coordination.

Week 4: Applying these mechanics to explore the structural outline of "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas.
