Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Syllabus: Classical Guitar Instruction
Studying the internationally recognized Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) classical guitar curriculum is one of the most comprehensive ways a musician can build elite, globally standardized musicianship. Progressing through these rigorous tiers requires flawless traditional technique, advanced standard notation literacy, and profound musical interpretation.
At Dan O Music Academy, we provide structured, rubric-based coaching under the direction of a Master of Music (M.M.) in Performance. We guide dedicated students through the official RCM classical guitar syllabus, providing a clear, multi-year roadmap from foundational technique to conservatory-level repertoire.
The Four Pillars of Comprehensive Study
The RCM standard demands much more than simply learning to play songs; it requires complete, well-rounded musicianship. To advance through our curriculum, students build excellence across four distinct categories:
Performance Repertoire
Polished, memorized performances of classical works spanning the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th-century eras, demonstrating historical understanding and dynamic contrast.
Technical Foundations
Rigorous execution of scales, arpeggios, and cadences at required tempos with consistent alternating right-hand fingering, proper nail/flesh execution, and a warm, projecting classical tone.
Sight-Reading Fluency
The ability to instantly process and perform a never-before-seen piece of music with accurate rhythm, notes, and articulation, a critical skill for any serious musician.
Ear Training (Aural Skills)
Developing sharp pitch discrimination, interval recognition, and rhythmic playback, empowering guitarists to map the sounds they hear directly to the fretboard.

RCM Classical Guitar Progression Roadmap
Rather than relying on arbitrary lesson plans, our studio utilizes a transparent, multi-year roadmap mapped directly to the RCM's progressively difficult stages. This ensures students are constantly challenged and progressing toward measurable benchmarks.
Foundational Literacy (Preparatory – Level 2)
Students establish absolute classical foundations. We focus on proper seating and hand posture, basic standard notation reading in the first position, primary major and minor scales, and performing standard, single-line classical works with introductory polyphony.
Intermediate Mastery (Levels 3 – 5)
Students face increasingly complex musical and technical demands. Repertoire expands to include demanding chordal voicings, extended left-hand shifting up the neck, barre chords, and intermediate contrapuntal works by composers like Carcassi, Sor, and Brouwer.
Advanced / Conservatory Bound
(Levels 6 – 10)
At the upper levels, students undergo rigorous technical refinement. Repertoire expands to include complex, multi-movement works, advanced Sonatas, and elite concert pieces by Bach, Villa-Lobos, and Tarrega. Mastering this tier demonstrates a collegiate level of musical dedication and provides the exact repertoire needed for university audition prescreens.
