Maryland State Music Teachers Association (MSMTA) Keyboard Musicianship Testing: Classical Piano Preparation
Progressing through the Maryland State Music Teachers Association (MSMTA) Keyboard Musicianship syllabus is one of the most comprehensive and respected credentials a piano student can earn. Advancing through these graded state levels requires fluent sight-reading, strict technical precision, and a deep understanding of written music theory.
At Dan O Music Academy, we provide structured, rubric-based piano coaching under the direction of a Master of Music (M.M.) in Performance to help students master the MSMTA curriculum, pass their annual adjudications with high honors, and build a verifiable collegiate resume.
What the MSMTA Adjudicators Evaluate
The Keyboard Musicianship exams grade strictly on comprehensive, well-rounded musicality. To pass and advance to the next level, adjudicators require excellence across four distinct categories:
Keyboard Technique
Flawless execution of scales, arpeggios, and cadences at required tempos with proper fingering, hand posture, and even tone production.
Sight-Reading Fluency
The ability to instantly process and perform a never-before-seen piece of music with accurate rhythm, notes, and dynamic articulation.
Written Music Theory
A comprehensive written exam testing a student's understanding of intervals, key signatures, chord structures, and musical terminology.
Repertoire Performance
Polished, memorized performances of classical repertoire demonstrating historical understanding, phrasing, and dynamic contrast.

MSMTA Testing Levels & Requirements
The MSMTA curriculum is divided into progressively difficult stages, ensuring students are constantly challenged from their first year of study through high school graduation.
Foundational Levels
(Levels 1–4)
Students establish core literacy. They master primary major and minor scales, basic sight-reading principles, and perform standard classical works from the Baroque and Classical eras.
Advanced / Conservatory Bound
(Levels 5–10)
At the upper levels, students face rigorous theory exams and highly complex technical requirements. Repertoire expands to include advanced Sonatas, Chopin Preludes, and 20th-century works. Completing these upper levels demonstrates a collegiate level of musical dedication.

Dan O Music Academy's Exam Preparation Timeline
Preparing for the MSMTA Keyboard Musicianship exam is a year-round process that requires dedicated, structured pacing. We build a customized curriculum timeline to ensure you peak exactly on testing day.
Phase 1: Fall & Winter (Technique & Theory Foundation)
September – November
We evaluate your current baseline and assign your target MSMTA Level. We immediately begin drilling the specific scales, arpeggios, and written theory requirements for that grade.
December – February
We finalize your performance repertoire. Lesson focus shifts to memorization, advanced phrasing, and weekly timed sight-reading exercises to build confidence under pressure.
Phase 2: Spring (Mock Exams & State Adjudication)
March
Registration for the spring testing window opens. We solidify all theory concepts and ensure repertoire is performance-ready.
April
We run high-pressure mock adjudications in our studio. We replicate the exact testing environment—from the written exam to the sight-reading test—to completely eliminate performance anxiety.
May
The official MSMTA Keyboard Musicianship exams take place at designated local testing centers. Students receive their graded rubrics, certificates, and state recognition.
